EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an evidenced-based and effective therapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including anxiety, depression, and panic disorders.

EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions. EMDR therapy, rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, allows the brain to resume its natural healing process. EMDR is based on the theory that your brain is adaptive and wired for healing. However, because we experience distressing events, sometimes our brain gets stuck.

EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages a person to briefly focus on a distressing memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, sounds, or tapping), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the traumatic or distressing memories.

EMDR follows a specific 8 phase format. One of these phases includes specific preparation called "resourcing". We will not activate or focus on traumatic/distressing memories (or negative core beliefs) until you are properly prepared with a robust set of positive coping skills for any difficult emotions that may come up.

I was trained in EMDR virtually and it can be done effectively via video sessions. Please contact me to discuss whether EMDR therapy may be a good fit for you.
